During the first few weeks of September, parents spend a lot of time ensuring that their childrens’ backpacks are well stocked with essentials, however it’s also important to prepare their immune system! Here are a four ways to ensure that your child’s immune system is ready for the new school year:

1. Sugar

This sneaky ingredient can be found anywhere (especially when it’s hiding behind a different name). When your child eats too much of this refined ingredient, it can prevent their immune system from doing it’s job to fend off bad bacteria. Not all sugar is bad though, continue to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, as they also contain essential vitamins and minerals.

2. Probiotics

Did you know that over 75% of our immune system is located in our gut? That means that everything you eat (including the ‘sometimes’ foods), has an affect on our immunity! We can help change our gut microbiome to make sure it’s full of good bacteria – and one of the ways is through probiotics that thrive in the human gut! There are many types of probiotic products and strains, so be sure to speak with your Naturopathic Doctor to find the right one for your child.

3. Astragalus

This is a herb that has been used for thousands of years to help strengthen the body from disease. It helps protect the body and mind from stress! Astragalus’ primary function is to protect and support the immune system – making it a great herb to utilize when your child goes back to school. Consult with your Naturopathic Doctor to determine if your child could benefit from taking this herb, and the appropriate dose.

4. Sleep

It may be difficult to get your child to put that tablet away before bed, but having a consistent sleep routine is key for good health. Not only is sleep great for the immune system, but it has been shown to help with attention, behaviour and memory. School-aged children should be getting about 9-12 hours of sleep per night. Sleep hygiene is important, so ensure that your child is going to sleep in a quiet, cool and dark room.

Book an appointment with Dr. Priolo, ND to learn how she can help keep your child in tip-top shape for the new year – she can’t promise that they’ll enjoy French class, but they won’t be sniffling through it!
